Gift Certificates
A gift certificate is a monetary substitute that can be cashed in for merchandise at a particular vendor. It is an easier alternative to the tedious process of choosing a gift. A gift certificate is easy and simple and can be given to any person, regardless of age, sex, or relation. Gift certificates were invented in part for the lazy and to some extent, for those who doubt their own ability to choose an appropriate gift. The earliest form of gift certificates was created by department stores when people exchanged products but were unable to buy something of equal value. Wanting to keep the money already paid, the stores invented gift certificates that could buy customers products for the spare price value at a later date. Not only was this a great way to make money, but it also worked as a promotional gimmick where people began to receive gift certificates for shopping beyond certain ranges.
Gift certificates are a very common item sold at a charity auction. Businesses who donate them see the benefit of marketing their company and get customers in the door. There are many ways to sell the certificates at your charity auction and it is very possible to sell them for more than the face value of the certificate.
